How Often Should You Add Content to Your Blog?

If you are trying to find an exact answer to this question you are going to be disappointed. I have been doing some research on blogging frequency and found many different answers.

So what really works?

How often should you post on your blog?

Before I get into the detailed answer about the frequency of adding posts to your blog I need to talk about the quality of your blog posts.

Quality is key

Always keep in mind that one really good quality post will outperform multiple low quality posts. What this means is that it is better to spend a lot of effort on one really good, long post than to have a few short post of possibly lesser quality. The search engines are more interested in providing their users with good content and a well-written post will rank higher. For this reason they will give preference to content that covers the topic in detail.

When we talk about a good quality post, you should be aiming for at least 1000 words and cover the topic completely. This means answering the key questions (if they all apply):

Why? When? How? Who? Where?

Do your research and cover the topic properly. Don’t be worried that your post will be too long, but make sure you break it up with sub-headings or ideas. Don’t leave any questions unanswered. Make sure that your reader does not have to go elsewhere to get their questions answered.

Blogging frequency

How often you add content to your blog will also depend on where you are in the life of your site.

If you are trying to get a new site to rank in the search engines then you need to focus primarily on adding content and adding as much as possible. I would suggest that you should be adding new content at least 3 to 4 times per week. If you have the time, you can even aim at adding content daily.

Adding content more frequently will help to boost the amount of content on your site as a whole. This is another area that the search engines look at when they decide to rank pages and posts from certain sites. If a site has only a few pages or posts then it will not be rated as highly as a site that has much more content. Posts and pages from sites with a lot of content do tend to get a little bit of preferencial treatment from the search engines.

For an established site, adding content on a regular basis is still very important. There are successful sites that only add content once a week, and some even less.

On the other hand, there are large, successful sites that add content multiple times a day, every day. This is not possible in the case of one person blogging on their own. These large sites usually have teams of people that contribute to the content on their blog. They are usually news sites.

This is why I said that there is no exact answer to the question. The important thing is to find a frequency that suits you and that you can stick to.

Consistency is another key factor

Once you have decided how often you are going to be adding content to your blog then you need to also decide when you are going to do this. It does not help if you suddenly pump out 10 blog posts one week and then do nothing for the next 2 weeks. Rather spread them out so that new content is being added every few days.

Once you establish some type of routine then try to post your new content on a regular basis. For example, if you are only posting once per week then do it on the same day each week. Your readers will get to know when you add new content and will come looking for it.

If you are posting on different days each week then your readers won’t really know when to come looking for new content and neither will the search engines know when to check your site.

To summarise:

You need to find a blogging frequency that will work for you and your schedule. Adding content more frequently does help to boost the ranking of your site, but it is not as important as the quality of the content you are posting.

Create your routine and find a schedule that works for you – then stick to it.

Be consistent with your blogging efforts.
