How to Add an Affiliate Link in WordPress

You have your WordPress blog and you are writing content to attract visitors to your site. Now you need to start earning some money from those visitors.

I have written a post that explains how affiliate marketing works, now we are going to look at exactly how you add affiliate links to your WordPress blog. This is one of the key skills that you need to know as an affiliate marketer, or even if you are just linking to other sources that are not on your own website.

I hope you know how to find your affiliate link for the site or product that you are promoting. I am not going to be discussing that in this post. The same method is used for an external links that you create on your site.

Let me walk you through the process of adding an affiliate link to a post. I wrote a post recently about where to buy domain names for your website and I will use that as an example to show you how to add an affiliate link to the post.

First, you need to have your affiliate link that you want to use. I usually copy this so that I can just paste it in without making any typing errors.
In the post that you are writing you need to go to where you want to insert your link.

In the above example, I am going to insert a link where the name SiteDomains is written.

Step 1: Highlight the name (or phrase) that you want to appear as a link.

Step 2: Click on the link icon (chain link) in the editor menu. It should look like the picture below.

Step 3: Paste your complete affiliate link into the box.

Step 4: Now click on the gear icon to the right of the box to edit the settings for this link. You will see the screen shown below.

If the link you are inserting will take your visitor to a different website then usually you will want to tick the box to open the link in a new tab.
When you are done, click the update button at the bottom.

You will see that the name has changed color, usually to blue text, to show that it has a link.

In my example they are purple because I went and tested them. This shows that you have clicked on them.

That’s it. You are done.

Your affiliate link is added and the site that you are promoting will know that the visitors have come to their site through your affiliate link.

As I mentioned earlier, this same method can be used for any external links that you add on your site. It does not necessarily have to be an affiliate link.

I hope you found that easy to follow. It can be a little confusing when you have not done it before, so please feel free to ask questions if you are unsure of anything. You are going to be using this a lot if you are developing a website to use for affiliate marketing.

  1. Hi, Lesley. You wrote a good, informative post on adding affiliate links. As an affiliate marketer, affiliate links are critical to the success of my business. Thanks for reinforcing my knowledge. Usually I just click on the bent arrow to activate the link. I hadn’t thought about clicking on the little gear before. That’ll help me I think. Thanks.

    1. Hi Grant, thanks for stopping by.

I just love how there is always something new to learn in the online world. After writing this article I came across another one that included many more options and it looks like I will have to learn about those and then do an update. It’s great that you could learn something from it.
